Overview of Barbados

There is a lot to say about moving to Barbados, and in case this article doesn’t touch on your area of interest, feel free to reach out to me directly so I can seek to help with your specific questions.

Living in Barbados all my life, I have personally helped a few friends and my family navigate, either coming here for the first time and deciding to make Barbados a second home or returning to Barbados after many years of living abroad.

Here is a quick overview if this is the very first time you are reading about Barbados.

Barbados, a beautiful island in the Caribbean, it is known for its stunning beaches, friendly locals, and rich cultural heritage. Each Caribbean island is unique and has its own offerings, what I find is special about Barbados is its blend of relaxation and yet there is still a vibrant vibe with a diverse range of activities and amenities. It is a business hub in the Caribbean and many across the world now also call here home.

Here are some fast facts!

Work and Business

  • Work Permits: Ensure you have the correct work permit if you plan to work. The Barbados government has specific regulations for foreign workers.

  • Business Opportunities: Barbados offers opportunities in sectors like tourism, finance, and IT. Consider local business regulations and opportunities.

Banking and Finance

  • Currency: The local currency is the Barbadian Dollar (BBD), but US dollars are also widely accepted.

  • Bank Accounts: Setting up a local bank account can simplify transactions and financial management.

Legal Requirements

  • Residency: Research the requirements for residency and understand the process for obtaining a residence permit.

  • Taxes: Be aware of your tax obligations, both locally and in your home country.

Cost of Living & Finding a Home

  • Housing: Rental prices can vary significantly depending on the location and type of property. I am happy to help you navigate this.

  • Neighborhoods: We have a number of pockets of popular neighbours in Barbados to suit different taste and requirements. For example, the more tranquil East Coast for a quieter lifestyle. Our West Coast if you are looking for more of a luxury lifestyle. Are you looking for more of a community? then we have several popular gated and non-gated communities with various amenities to meet your needs.   Contact me here.

  • Groceries and Dining: Imported goods are pricier. However, local produce can be found island-wide, and dining out can be affordable. Barbados is known for its many restaurants and varied eateries. See here for my explore Barbados guide on my favorite spots.

  • Keep in mind that the market can fluctuate depending on the time of year (Winter Season, for example).

  • Public vs. Private: Barbados has a robust healthcare system. Public healthcare is available, but many opt for private health insurance for quicker access to services.

  • Health Insurance: It’s advisable to have comprehensive health insurance to cover any medical needs.

  • Public Transport: Buses and taxis are available, but many residents opt to own a car for convenience and reliability.

  • Cycling and Walking: These are popular and practical in many areas, but not the preferred form of transportation. You will find many persons walking and cycling as a form of exercise.
